Matted and signed illustration for Kraken edition of Herman Melville's "Pierre; or, the Ambiguities"
New York: 1995. In 1995 Maurice Sendak illustrated a special edition of Herman Melville's novel "Pierre; or, the Ambiguities," in collaboration with Melville scholar Hershel Parker. This "Kraken" special edition restored the text to its initial, shorter state, and featured many illustrations by Sendak, who thought the book was Melville's greatest novel. The illustrations are, by far, the most sexually frank of Sendak's career. This illustration features a naked man embracing a half-naked woman, and was used as the cover image for the book's dust jacket. Professionally set in cream-colored matting, which measures 8 x 10 inches. The illustration measures 2 3/4 x 3 1/2 inches. Sendak's signature in lower right corner. Fine. Item #9030989
